Strengthening local governance in India, particularly through empowered gram panchayats dealing with 29 subjects mandated by the Indian Constitution, holds significant promise for advancing the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The localisation of SDGs aligns with the principle that effective governance begins at the grassroots level. An efficiently managed village under the local governance paradigm can positively impact 16 out of the 17 SDGs. Empowering local institutions not only ensures more targeted and context-specific development but also sets a valuable example for the global community in achieving the SDGs through decentralized, participatory, and sustainable approaches.
